Flagler County Education Foundation Program Recognized on State Level for Second Year in a Row

For two years in a row now, the Take Stock in Children program in Flagler County, which is run by the Flagler County Education Foundation, has been awarded a Gold Performance Level and the Luminary Award.  These are the two highest awards offered at the state level for the Take Stock in Children program.  The local program was assessed scores on 16 performance indicators, such as matching students with adult mentors, reaching learning goals, and financial stability of the local program.  It exceeded all of the expectations the state has prior to matching the money raised locally.

Joseph Rizzo, Executive Director of the Flagler County Education Foundation says, “This endorses what our Take Stock in Children program director, Rebecca Bower, has done in pairing our students with mentors who provide the needed guidance to see these children succeed.  These kids are able to attain something that was only a dream before they began this program. Our goal is to send these students to college with the knowledge and skills needed to not only meet, but exceed their expectations.  The tireless hours of work Becca puts into this program means more of our students have the opportunity to continue their education.”

Jay Gardner, Flagler County’s Property Appraiser is also on the Take Stock in Children Leadership Committee.  He adds, “The Take Stock in Children Program is something that can change a kid’s life, you’re talking about a prepaid college scholarship, but more importantly a mentor all through high school and that’s something that so many kids desperately need.”

Take Stock in Children is a statewide program providing at-risk students with a mentor and college scholarship.  In return, these students sign contracts promising to regularly attend school, remain drug-free, avoid behavior issues, and earn satisfactory grades.  To date, the Flagler County Education Foundation has seen more than 200 students successfully complete the program and go on to college since the program came to Flagler Schools in 2000.
